Step 2 - Rules

Task
  • Your task is to build a bridge that will support the most weight as compared to its mass.
Materials
(You may only use the following materials to construct your bridge.)
  • One Box of Pasta (provided by teacher)
  • Hot Glue Gun (provided by teacher)
  • 5 Glue Sticks (provided by teacher)
Design Constraints
  • All bridges must be able to span an 18 inch chasm. (This means that your bridge will need to be longer than 18 inches.)
  • You must make a place for the bridge to be loaded. We will use a bar and hook. You must make a place in the center of your bridge where the bar and hook can be placed. (See sketch)
  • There is no maximum or minimum length requirement. Remember, your bridge must span an 18 inch chasm.
  • Maximum bridge width is 7 inches. You cannot make your bridge wider than 7 inches.
  • You may glue 3 strands of spaghetti together to form a single piece, but no more than 3 strands. This is referred to as double or triple bonding or lamination.
  • No part of the bridge may touch the ground.
  • You must leave room for the load bar to be placed on your bridge. The load bar is 1.5 inches wide and 1 inch high. See below.
